This is one place in the world that you must see before you die! Petra is the ancient city carved out of the beautiful rose colored sandstone mountains in Ma’an, Jordan which is the Biblical land of Edom. This ancient city, dating back to the 3rd century BC, lies on the slopes of the biblical Mount Hor (where Moses stood looking at the Promised Land). This site remained unknown to the western world until it was discovered in 1812 by a Swiss explorer. The Nabataeans inhabited this natural fortress and built temples, houses, amphitheatres, and tombs in the rocks. This naturally fortified city is enclosed by majestic mountains and steep cliffs. It only has one main entrance which is a gorgeous narrow gorge that lies to the east. “Petra” means rock. It is the same word that Jesus used when describing the foundation of His church. “…Upon this Rock (Petra) I will build my church and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it” (Mat.16:18). This Rock solid unmovable foundation is none other than Jesus Christ Himself (1Cor.10:4). He is our Shelter, our Refuge, our Fortress, our Foundation, and our Living Hope! On Christ the solid Rock I stand, all other ground is sinking sand. Have you made Jesus your foundation? If you look carefully you can see Wati standing to the right side of the entrance.
